- Description
-
Photograph of Mertie West standing beneath the portico covering Plymouth Rock. Water Street stretches across the foreground. On the far side of the street, the portico sheltering Plymouth Rock stands at center and extends beyond the top frame. It is viewed close-up from its western side. Six Doric order columns line the long sides of the rectangular structure and 4 columns line the short sides. The columns support a capping entablature. An inscription in the frieze on the near side reads, "ERECTED BY THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF THE COLONIAL DAMES OF AMERICA TO COMMEMORATE THE THREE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LANDING OF THE PILGRIMS." Mertie West stands beneath the portico and between the 2 central columns on its western side. She faces camera. Plymouth Bay is barely visible in the background.
