- Description
-
View of the base of an oil derrick with a structure covered in corrugated metal sheets owned by the H. L. J. Oil Co. at the Playa Del Rey oil field. A man is standing in the center of the photograph.
The Playa del Rey oil field, located in the area north and south of Ballona Creek where it runs into the Pacific Ocean, was active in the 1930's. At the end of this time the field lost pressure and in 1942 the area was converted into a storage reservoir for natural gas, called the Playa del Rey storage field.
