- Photograph of a couple of elk resting beneath pine trees, spotted while H. H. and Mertie West traveled between the Mammoth Hot Springs Area to Madison Junction. A flat landscape dotted by pine trees stretches across the foreground and into the distance. Right-of-center, a pine tree stands and beneath it sits an elk. Another elk sits beneath a pine behind and to the left of the aforementioned pine. A stream is visible at the foot of the pine-covered hill- or mountainside that stretches across the background.

- Text from negative sleeve: 1592. Yellowstone trip 1942. Yellowstone, Wednesday June 24, 1942. 1. Returning from Mammoth to Madison Junction, saw two bull elk off the road to the right. Took their photo twice, but it was late, and pretty far away. Not so good. 2 films. 3. 4. Lot of bears on this portion of the road, and here are photos of a couple. 2 films. 4 films. [Note: In all instances of the year date, 1942, the last digit (2) is handwritten over a typed 3.]
