George sits hunched over at center and faces towards the left. He looks down at a gold pan he holds. H. H. West sits directly behind him with his hands clasped in front of him. Frank Lemberger sits on the ground at right and looks towards George. The photographer's foot enters the foreground along the bottom edge of the image.

Text from negative sleeve: 672. Monrovia, Calif. October 30, 1898. Sawpit canyon. Going over into the canyon from Monrovia, Guy West in the distance. George M.West wanted to test Sawpit canyon for gold. Went in with a miner's tent, with aid of Uncle Frank Lemberger who lived at Monrovia. We went over one Sunday to see him. L to R: Guy West with gun. Dont[sic] know the other boy by tent unless it is Wayne West. George M. West stooping over. Frank Lemberger on the saw horse, smoking. George M. West panning for gold.
