This image appears to have been taken on the same occasion as other images (ark no. 21198/zz002hq2kg and ark no. 21198/zz002hq2p1), which, on verso, have the date 1903. Also on verso, the women are identified as Evelyn and Nan.
Text from negative sleeve: 270. Catalina Island. About 1897. I was working at the S. P. R. R. Arcade depot in the Superintendent's office. One Monday morning on arrival of the S. P. train from San Pedro, Calif., the conductor of the train brot [sic] up to the Superintendent's office an armful of coats, sweaters, parasols and grips that passengers had left on his train. They had come over from Catalina on the boat late Sunday night, and were tired and sleepy and left a lot of stuff. Couple of us tagged it all up and examined the grips for valuables, etc. One grip had a couple rolls of film, and as I was taking pictures all the time, the boys told me to take the film and get it developed, and we would put it with the grip and if called for, we could collect for the work. We figured the photos might identify the owner. Months passed and no one called for the cheap grip or the few things in it, and I kept the films. There are 12 films.
