Harriet A. McCabe, a woman in her fifties with short, wavy hair and a light-colored dress, sits on a garden bench posing with her clown doll collection. A director of the Ruth Protective Home, a women's and children's shelter near El Monte in Los Angeles County, McCabe acquired hundreds of dolls to donate them to the shelter come Christmas time.
