Text from newspaper caption: Fellow Fire-Fighters Rush to Aid of Dying Fireman As He Falls From Ladder Top at Industrial Fire. Death came to Bert F. Hancock, 36-year-old fireman, in a strange way yesterday. He went with County Engine Company No. 9 on his day off to help fight a fire in the Western Candy Box factory on East Sixty-Third street. While helping lead a hose to top of forty-foot ladder sudden pressure of water toppled him to the ground. He died on the way to the hospital. The above photo was taken right after Hancock’s fatal plunge. Times photo by Staff Photographer Jack Herod
