Photograph of a Women's Ambulance Defense Corps unit, in uniform, standing at attention on the steps of Santa Monica City Hall. A banner with the American colors and eagle reading, "E. Pluribus Unum," hangs above the entrance, flanked by two stripped banners. Below, American flags are held by six Corps members in the back row.
The Women's Ambulance and Defense Corps was a volunteer organization open to women ages 18-45. Along with Red Cross First Aid courses, the women were trained in a litany of subjects including: ambulance (and heavy vehicle) driving and repair, mechanics, X-ray, map reading, semaphoring, radio sending and receiving, and photography.
