The parade was part of the 71st annual encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic, Department of California and Nevada was held in Santa Monica, May 1-6, 1938. The event was noted in the article, “All but Two Ride in Parade: Pair of Nonagenarian G.A.R. Veterans Still Able to March Afoot,” Los Angeles Times, 5 May 1938: A2
Photograph of a Shriners drum corps in the annual California-Nevada Department, Grand Army of the Republic parade. The drummers wear light-colored shirts and pants with sashes around the waist, bow ties and Shriner's hats. The men are led by a drum major wearing a suit and tie. The procession follows Wilshire Boulevard and is captured here at Third Street. Automobiles are parked along the commercial thoroughfare in front of a variety of businesses. One auto advertises a business on the driver's side door. Text reads: "Bay Cities Electic Co., 1436 4th St. Arcade, Phone 21288 [or 0]." Signs on the buildings and printed on awnings read: “Yardage, Woolen,” “Maher Music Co.,” “Wilshire Cafeteria,” “Pan Pan Studios, Honey Bell Gifts, “The D.B Wright Investment Co.," “Marinello” and “Health Foods.”
