Photograph of John H. Crum (right) and Mr. Maxwell seated in a patio in front of potted succulent plants. Each man wears a hat and plaid shirt; both men hold smoking pipes.
Mr. Maxwell was likely a resident of Randsburg (formerly Rand Camp), located in the Rand Mountains, Ridgecrest vicinity, Kern County. Rand Camp quickly developed after gold was discovered at nearby Rand Mine in 1895. The area is now a tourist destination as a living ghost town.
