View of the Cosmopolitan Hotel (Casa de Bandini) in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park when it was owned by Cave Couts, Jr.
The Cosmopolitan Hotel is located at the southeast corner of the plaza in Old Town San Diego Historic Park. Originally the Casa de Bandini, it was constructed in 1827-1829 as a single-story adobe residence. It became a hotel in 1869 when a wood frame 2nd floor was added, and was an olive factory from 1900-1919. This photograph was taken sometime after the 1930 remodel in the steamboat revival style popular in Louisiana with vertical lath screens along the top of the porch and balcony. James and Nora Cardwell, who purchased the building in 1945, remodeled it in the Spanish Colonial style. Its restoration to its 1872 state, as the Cosmopolitan Hotel, was completed around 2010.
