- Description
-
This image is of Dr. Cass Arthur Reed, wearing a doctoral cap and gown, made evident by the three velvet bars on each sleeve of the gown. In his hand is a diploma or award of some kind, with the word "Colligii" legible. The other half of the document is held by another man, also in doctoral dress. Other men, also in doctoral dress, surround them. This photograph may have been taken at Pomona College on 28 Jan. 1928 when Dr. Reed was given the honorary degree of doctor of divinity.
Dr. Cass Arthur Reed was a graduate of Pomona College, and then later, Harvard, Columbia and the Union Theological Seminary. He earned degrees from all of these institutions. In 1912, he was appointed the Dean of the International College of Smyrna Turkey. He is referenced in numerous L.A. Times articles, including the Aug. 11, 1914 article "Pomona 'Grad' College Dean Home from Smyrna, Will Take Sports Leader with Him to Turkey".
