This image is of Dr. Cass Arthur Reed, wearing a doctoral cap and gown, made evident by the three velvet bars on each sleeve of the gown. This photograph may have been taken at Pomona College on 28 Jan. 1928 when Dr. Reed was given the honorary degree of doctor of divinity.
Dr. Cass Arthur Reed was a graduate of Pomona College, and then later, Harvard, Columbia and the Union Theological Seminary. He earned degrees from all of these institutions. In 1912, he was appointed the Dean of the International College of Smyrna Turkey. He is referenced in numerous L.A. Times articles, including "Pomona 'Grad' College Dean Home from Smyrna, Will Take Sports Leader with Him to Turkey." Los Angeles Times, 11 Aug. 1914.
