View of Fernando in mid-air during a broad jump at a track field. His best mark at that time was 23 ft. 7 in.
Fernando Ramos, a track and field athlete attending Jefferson High School, was a champion at the Southern California Junior Olympics in 1929. In 1933 he won the Southern California broad jump title and took third place in the State meet. The Junior Olympics achievements of Ramos and his fellow track stars were widely acclaimed and celebrated in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Times sponsored a voyage to Hawaii for Ramos and 3 other Junior Olympics champions, Jerry Deal, Van Baker, and Robert San Jose in August of that year.
