Felipe de Neve was the founder of the city of Los Angeles. The 7 foot high statue of De Neve was set in the 1873 pool at the center of the Plaza facing the Plaza Church. The statue was donated by the Daughters of the Golden West.
Biographical/Historical Note: Sculptor. Born in Fresno, California. Studied at the Otis Art Institute and with Stanton Macdonald-Wright. Most of his works were executed in bronze. Lion wrote the book SCULPTURE FOR BEGINNERS, and worked on the WPA art project [Smithsonian Archives of American Art].
