Text reads: Las Vegas, Nev., May 17.--(AP)--Discovery in a desert wilderness northwest of here of traces of Indian life believed extinct for at least 30 centuries prompted J. L. Nusmaum, Government archaeologist to telegraph Washington today recommending establishment of a national monument. The most prized discoveries were made in the Valley f Fire. Carvings believed wrought by the oldest known human race in America were found on the striking and fantastic rock formations of the valley. Particular importance was attached to writings on one cliff, which depicted a mountain sheep hunt. The remarkable feature, Nusbaum declared, was a drawing of hunters armed with “atlatis” peculiar weapons sought for years by archaeologists but never seen before. From this weapon, it was believed, later Indian races evolved the bow and arrow. Leaving the valley, the party proceeded to the little known petrified forest. Here were found gigantic trees which had been swept to earth as though felled by a huge scythe. By the slow process of immersion in silicified water, they have been turned into agate.
