Exterior view of the ramparts, round towers, and battlements (crenelations) around the fortified French town of Carcassonne. The town was officially founded in the fifth century but the settlement was fortified by the Romans even earlier. Structures include fifty-three towers and a double ring of ramparts around the outskirts of the town.
