- Summary
- Jessie Mae (Brown) Beavers was a pioneering black journalist, who began her career at the California Eagle, moving to the Los Angeles Sentinel in 1948. She was a Los Angeles native, who graduated from Los Angeles High School and studied sociology at UCLA. She was a life member of the NAACP, and helped to organize local chapters of the National Association of Media Women and the Black Women's Forum. She also served for 16 years on the Los Angeles Human Relations Commission. She was married to Leroy Albert Beavers Sr.
