Arthur Houston started out with a small barbershop and pool hall, and later became a licensed real estate broker and contractor. He opened the Crescent Insurance Agency on Central Avenue (across from the Dunbar Hotel) and later a real estate and construction company at a different location. He was also appointed a Real Estate Commissioner for the State of California later in his career. He was active in the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, and participated in anti-segregation efforts in Los Angeles and neighboring areas.
Herman Spurlock, well known on Central Avenue, made a living putting together shows and entertainment for nightclubs and fundraisers.
