About this Collection
James Horton Shankland (1846-1923) was an attorney for the San Francisco Board of Trade for thirteen years before relocating to Los Angeles in 1888 where he founded, and was an officer of, the Los Angeles Bar Association. Joseph Smith Fowler (1820-1902) practiced law in Tennessee before serving as state comptroller (1862-65) and U.S. Senator (1866-71). His daughter, Louisa Fowler, married James Horton Shankland in 1874. The collection consists of correspondence, papers, and scrapbooks related to James Horton Shankland and his involvement with the Los Angeles Driving Club and his legal practice in Los Angeles. A portion of the collection consists of Fowler family material and includes correspondence, papers, and diaries of Joseph S. Fowler.
