Photograph of Navy sailors providing a fanfare of bugles in front of the Federal Building at the California Pacific International Exposition.
Charles Hamilton Owens (1881-1958) was an illustrator and landscape painter, and Los Angeles Times staff artist [identified as the photographer in image ark no. 21198/zz002d9x88].
The Federal Building in the Palisades section of Balboa Park was designed in a pre-Columbian revival style under the general direction of architect Richard Requa, with Juan Larrinaga as head of the art department and H. Louis Bodmer as head of the architectural department. Elements of the façade frieze are derived from the Palace of the Governor in Uxmal.
