Description

Eugene R. Plummer and his family once owned sections of Los Angeles including the Hancock Park area, mid-Wilshire, Hollywood Hills, and West Hollywood. The site of his home was purchased by the County of Los Angeles in 1937 and is known as Plummer Park, West Hollywood.

Text: Dear Mr. Bartlett, I think I have finally landed that Plummer Park story---and with the Times Magazine, after all ! I took it to Mr. Criswell yesterday and told him that was the logical market for the material, and I could not see where his earlier article on the five original land grants would be at all repeated in this, even if so many months had not elapsed since the appearance of the other anyway. So He took it to examine personally, very favorably disposed toward it after I told him what personal values it represents. But he said he did not like the pictures for reproduction, and for me to ask you if you could not make a sharper print of the one showing the windmill. He would also like a lighter print of Mr. Plummer on horseback, as many of the lines would be lost in reproduction of the dark one, even if he blocks out the background, as he intends. I said I would take the matter up with you. He virtually ordered another story, too---one about the work along dramatic lines among the local Japanese, who have two schools on Noh-Drama here, it seems. I spent between three and four hours recently watching presentations of the Noh-drama at the Buddhist temple, and took copious notes. I am to-day writing to the president of their association asking for the opportunity to get fuller information. If I can arrange to get some exclusive photographs, too, will let you know, if you would like to make them. I have not been able to develop the Classical Center material yet, having many unavoidable interruptions. But the Old Mansions story has created much comment since it came out last Sunday. Some of your pictures were used, but Mr. Criswell said he sent a Times man after a few more. I shall be glad to get the Windmill story published at last, for I have spent much postage sending it around the country. My agent in New York tried it with several markets there, but said it was almost impossible to sell a feature story in New York that had not been ordered in advance. Mr. Clover said he would use the material in Saturday Night if I would make it into two shorter articles, and that he could use the horseback picture for the cover. But I didn’t want to pull the thing apart if I could place it ‘as is’, and so hope it will stay with the Times. Hoping you are all well, I remain, as ever,Sincerely yours, Neeta Marquis [signature]
