Notes
- Summary
- Written probably in Bologna in the 2nd quarter of the fourteenth century. Two other leaves from this manuscript have been identified: the one that Columbia University Library Department of Manuscripts acquired at Christie’s Sale 2 June 2004, lot. 1; and the one in Quaritch Catalogue 1348 Book Hands of the Middle Ages Pt. VIII (London 2007), no. 51 and plate, containing a payment record for correcting pecia viii. The Rouse bifolium and the Columbia and Quaritch leaves all come from a companion volume to Beinecke Library MS 338, Rosarium Decretorum Secunda Pars, acquired by Thomas Marston from Larry Witten in 1958. This companion volume, containing the first part of the Rosarium was fragmentary, and it also belonged to Witten. From this he sold and gave away leaves, including the present bifolium. At his death the remaining leaves were sold at Christie’s, whence Columbia and Quaritch acquired their leaves. Rouse MS 19 was given by Witten to Richard Rouse in May 1984, on the occasion of Richard’s lecture on stationers and pecia production to the Friends of the Beinecke Library at Yale. Given to UCLA in 2005.
